EOS-05 (GISAT-1A) — India’s New “Eye in the Sky”
Context
ISRO successfully launched EOS-05, earlier known as GISAT-1A, on 4 September 2026 aboard GSLV-F17 from Sriharikota. The satellite was first placed in a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit and subsequently raised into its operational geosynchronous orbit.
Background
EOS-05 is the successor to EOS-03/GISAT-1, whose 2021 mission failed because of a problem in the cryogenic stage. At about 2,367 kg, EOS-05 is designed for high-frequency Earth observation. It is India’s first dedicated imaging satellite placed in geosynchronous orbit, giving it the ability to observe the Indian region much more continuously than conventional low-Earth-orbit satellites.
