1. Why is the independence of the Election Commission important for Indian democracy?

Answer: The Election Commission is important because citizens must trust that elections are administered fairly. The present controversy involves opposition allegations about the functioning of the Commission, while the Commission says differences among members reflect normal institutional deliberation and final decisions were collective. These competing claims should not be treated as established findings. The larger issue is institutional credibility. Independence from political pressure is essential, but transparency, collective decision-making and clear procedures are equally important. In my view, a constitutional institution must not only function independently but also command public confidence through demonstrably fair processes.

2. What does the debate over appointment of Election Commissioners tell us about institutional independence?
