TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 185
1. The Election Commission is constitutionally independent. Why does public confidence still matter?
Answer: Constitutional independence and public confidence are complementary. Article 324 gives the Election Commission responsibility for supervising, directing and controlling elections. Recent reports describe disagreements among Commissioners over aspects of the Special Intensive Revision, while the ECI has said that observations were part of normal deliberation and official decisions were collective. Contemporary reporting confirms that two Commissioners had recorded objections on several occasions. This does not itself prove electoral wrongdoing. The appropriate response is transparent procedures, recorded reasoning and effective remedies. Democratic institutions need both legal independence and visible procedural credibility.
2. How should India approach the Naga peace process after decades of negotiations?
