TEN CRITICAL QUESTIONS ON CURRENT GEOPLOITICAL AND NATIONAL ISSUES – 203
Q1. If the United States and Russia improve their relations, will India's strategic importance decline?
Answer: Sir/Ma'am, I do not think India's strategic importance will necessarily decline. India's importance comes from its economic size, geographical position, defence capabilities and independent foreign policy. Better US–Russia relations may reduce pressure on India regarding Russian energy and defence purchases. We should strengthen domestic defence manufacturing, diversify trade and maintain constructive relations with major powers. My view is that strategic autonomy means having the capacity to make independent decisions, even when global power equations change.
