1. Environmental Science
Environmental Science is the study of the interaction between living organisms and their surroundings. It combines knowledge from biology, chemistry, physics, geography, and ecology to understand environmental processes and solve environmental problems. Environmental science examines natural resources, ecosystems, pollution, climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development. Its main objective is to maintain a balance between human activities and nature. A healthy environment is essential for human survival, economic growth, and social well-being. Environmental science helps create awareness about conservation and promotes responsible use of natural resources for present and future generations.
2. Physical Environment (Abiotic Environment)
The physical or abiotic environment consists of non-living components such as air, water, soil, sunlight, temperature, and minerals. These factors influence the survival, growth, and distribution of living organisms. Abiotic components provide essential resources needed for life and determine the characteristics of ecosystems. Climate, rainfall, and landforms are also part of the physical environment. Changes in abiotic factors can significantly affect ecological balance and biodiversity. Understanding the physical environment is important for agriculture, resource management, environmental planning, and conservation. It forms the foundation upon which all biological activities and ecosystem functions depend.
3. Living Environment (Biotic Environment)
The living or biotic environment includes all living organisms such as plants, animals, microorganisms, and humans. These organisms interact with one another and with the physical environment to form ecosystems. Biotic components are classified as producers, consumers, and decomposers. Plants produce food through photosynthesis, animals consume plants or other animals, and microorganisms decompose dead matter. These interactions maintain ecological balance and nutrient cycling. The biotic environment supports biodiversity and contributes to ecosystem stability. Understanding living components helps scientists study food chains, population dynamics, species conservation, and the overall functioning of natural ecosystems.
4. Atmospheric Gases: Constant and Variable Gases
The atmosphere contains a mixture of gases essential for life. Constant gases include nitrogen (78.09%), oxygen (20.94%), and small amounts of inert gases such as argon, helium, krypton, and xenon. Their proportions remain relatively stable. Variable gases, such as carbon dioxide, water vapour, ozone, methane, and other trace gases, change in concentration over time and place. These gases influence weather, climate, and the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide and water vapour play significant roles in regulating Earth's temperature. Understanding atmospheric composition is important for studying climate change, air pollution, and environmental sustainability.
5. Abiotic Components
Abiotic components are the non-living elements of an ecosystem, including air, water, soil, sunlight, temperature, humidity, and minerals. These factors directly influence the survival and growth of living organisms. Sunlight provides energy for photosynthesis, water supports biological processes, and soil supplies nutrients for plants. Abiotic components determine the structure and productivity of ecosystems. Variations in temperature, rainfall, and soil conditions affect species distribution and biodiversity. They also influence agriculture, forestry, and environmental management. Abiotic factors interact continuously with biotic components, creating conditions necessary for maintaining ecological balance and sustaining life on Earth.
6. Biotic Components
Biotic components are the living parts of an ecosystem, including plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, and other microorganisms. They interact with one another through food chains, food webs, and ecological relationships such as predation, competition, and symbiosis. Biotic components are grouped into producers, consumers, and decomposers. Producers generate food, consumers obtain energy by feeding on others, and decomposers recycle nutrients back into the environment. These interactions ensure energy flow and nutrient cycling within ecosystems. Biotic components play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, ecological stability, and the functioning of natural and human-managed ecosystems.
7. Atmosphere
The atmosphere is the gaseous envelope surrounding the Earth. It consists mainly of nitrogen and oxygen, along with small amounts of carbon dioxide, water vapour, and other gases. The atmosphere protects life by filtering harmful solar radiation, regulating temperature, and supporting weather and climate systems. It is divided into layers such as the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. Most weather phenomena occur in the troposphere, while the ozone layer in the stratosphere protects Earth from ultraviolet radiation. The atmosphere is essential for respiration, water cycling, and maintaining conditions necessary for life.
8. Components of Environment (Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere, Biosphere)
The environment consists of four major components: atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere. The atmosphere includes the air surrounding Earth. The hydrosphere comprises all water bodies such as oceans, rivers, lakes, and groundwater. The lithosphere consists of the Earth's solid crust, including rocks and soil. The biosphere includes all living organisms and the regions where life exists. These components interact continuously to support ecological processes and sustain life. Changes in one sphere affect the others. Understanding their interdependence is essential for environmental conservation, resource management, climate studies, and sustainable development.
