HOW VIRUSES REALLY INFECT CELLS
1. Viral Attachment
Viral attachment is the first step in the infection process. During this stage, viral surface proteins bind to specific receptors present on the host cell membrane. This interaction is highly selective and determines which organisms, tissues, or cells the virus can infect, a property known as host range and cell tropism. For example, SARS-CoV-2 uses the ACE2 receptor to enter human cells. Without successful attachment, infection cannot occur. The specificity of receptor recognition explains why some viruses infect only certain species or organs. Therefore, viral attachment is a critical step that initiates the entire viral life cycle.
2. Cell Entry
After attachment, the virus enters the host cell through mechanisms such as membrane fusion or receptor-mediated endocytosis. In membrane fusion, the viral envelope merges with the host cell membrane, releasing the viral genome into the cytoplasm. In receptor-mediated endocytosis, the virus is engulfed into a vesicle before releasing its genetic material.
