Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that infects the upper and lower respiratory tract, including the nose, throat, and lungs. It belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and contains single-stranded RNA as its genetic material. HMPV spreads mainly through respiratory droplets released during coughing or sneezing, close personal contact, and touching contaminated surfaces. It causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are most vulnerable. Most infections are self-limiting, but severe cases may require hospitalization and supportive medical care.
2. Symptoms of HMPV Infection
The symptoms of HMPV infection are similar to those of the common cold and other respiratory viral infections. Common symptoms include fever, cough, runny or blocked nose, sore throat, wheezing, shortness of breath, and fatigue. In most healthy individuals, symptoms are mild and resolve within one to two weeks with proper rest and hydration. However, in infants, older adults, or people with chronic lung diseases, the infection can progress to bronchitis or pneumonia, causing difficulty in breathing and requiring medical attention. Early diagnosis and supportive treatment help reduce complications and promote faster recovery from the infection.

Certain groups are more likely to develop severe illness from HMPV infection. These include infants and young children, whose immune systems are still developing, and elderly individuals, whose immunity naturally declines with age. HMPV spreads mainly through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Close contact, such as shaking hands or caring for an infected person, also increases the risk of transmission. The virus can survive on contaminated surfaces like door handles, phones, and tables. When a person touches these surfaces and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth, infection may occur. Crowded places and poor ventilation facilitate the spread of the virus. Practicing good hand hygiene, wearing masks during respiratory illness, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals significantly reduce transmission.

Preventing HMPV infection mainly involves maintaining good personal hygiene and reducing exposure to infected individuals. Washing hands regularly with soap and water removes viruses from the skin. Wearing a mask when experiencing respiratory symptoms helps prevent the spread of droplets. Covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing using a tissue or elbow reduces transmission. Avoiding close contact with sick people and staying home when ill protect others from infection. Keeping rooms well ventilated decreases viral concentration indoors. Drinking enough water, eating nutritious food, getting adequate sleep, and maintaining overall health strengthen the immune system against respiratory infections.
6. Treatment of HMPV Infection
Currently, there is no specific antiviral medication or vaccine routinely available for Human Metapneumovirus infection. Treatment is mainly supportive, focusing on relieving symptoms and helping the body recover naturally. Patients are advised to get adequate rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take fever-reducing medicines or pain relievers as prescribed by a healthcare professional. In severe cases involving breathing difficulties, hospitalization may be required for oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, or advanced respiratory support. Antibiotics are not effective against HMPV unless a secondary bacterial infection develops. Most healthy individuals recover completely with proper supportive care.
