1. Mahanadi River – The Lifeline of Odisha

The Mahanadi River is one of the most important rivers of peninsular India and is often called the “Lifeline of Odisha.” It is the third-largest river system in peninsular India and the largest river of Odisha. The river supports agriculture, industry, irrigation, fisheries, and drinking water supply for millions of people. The fertile plains formed by the Mahanadi basin contribute significantly to food production in eastern India. Due to its economic and cultural importance, the river plays a crucial role in the development of Odisha and neighboring regions. It remains a vital natural resource for sustainable growth.

2. Mahanadi Basin and Course

The Mahanadi River basin extends across the states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha, with smaller portions in Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. The river originates from the Sihawa Hills in Chhattisgarh and flows eastward across central India before entering Odisha. It finally drains into the Bay of Bengal near False Point, forming a fertile delta. The basin covers a vast area and supports diverse ecosystems, agricultural lands, forests, and industries. The river’s extensive drainage network helps distribute water across the region, making it one of India’s most significant river systems for economic and environmental sustainability.
