MAJOR MUSEUMS OF INDIA — HERITAGE, COLLECTIONS AND EDUCATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE

1. Importance of Museums

• Museums preserve, document and interpret objects connected with history, archaeology, art, anthropology, science, technology and natural heritage.
• They serve as centres of education, research, conservation and public awareness.
• Museums also strengthen cultural identity by connecting present generations with India’s civilisational and artistic past.

2. National Museum — New Delhi

• The National Museum, New Delhi is one of India’s premier museums and contains collections spanning several phases of Indian history.
• Its holdings include objects from the Harappan civilisation, Buddhist art, sculptures, manuscripts, decorative arts, coins, paintings and arms.
• It plays an important role in preserving and presenting India’s archaeological and artistic heritage.
• For competitive examinations, it should be remembered as a major national-level museum under the cultural heritage framework of the Government of India.

3. Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya — Bhopal

• The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) at Bhopal is a major anthropological museum devoted to the cultural diversity of India.
• It presents tribal, folk and indigenous traditions through indoor galleries, open-air exhibitions and community-based displays.

• The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) in Mumbai was formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India.
• Its collections cover Indian art, archaeology, decorative arts and natural history.
• The museum building itself is an important example of Indo-Saracenic architecture.
• It remains one of western India’s most prominent cultural institutions.
