1. Importance of Sports Competitions

• Major sports competitions create platforms for international competition, national prestige, talent development and cultural exchange.
• Many sports are identified with prestigious cups, trophies or championship titles.
• For competitive examinations, it is useful to remember the sport, governing body, trophy or championship name, and the nature of the competition.

2. Cricket — ICC Cricket World Cup

• The ICC Cricket World Cup is the leading international championship in One Day International cricket.
• The first men’s Cricket World Cup was held in 1975 in England.
• The winning team receives the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy.
• Cricket also has separate global tournaments for Test cricket, T20 cricket and women’s cricket.

3. Football — FIFA World Cup

• The FIFA World Cup is the most prestigious international men’s football tournament.
• It is organised by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
• The first tournament was held in 1930 in Uruguay.
• The winning national team receives the FIFA World Cup Trophy.

4. Hockey — FIH Hockey World Cup

• The Hockey World Cup is organised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
• The first men’s Hockey World Cup was held in 1971.
• The winning team receives the World Cup trophy, while other major hockey events include the Olympic Games, Hockey Pro League and continental championships.
• India has a distinguished history in international hockey, particularly at the Olympic Games.

5. Tennis — Wimbledon Championships

• Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis championships and is played annually in London.
• The men’s singles champion receives the Gentlemen’s Singles Trophy, while the women’s singles champion receives the Venus Rosewater Dish.
• Wimbledon is notable for its grass courts and long traditions.
• The other Grand Slams are the Australian Open, French Open and US Open.
