1. Introduction to the Murray River

The Murray River is the longest river in Australia and one of the country's most important water resources. It originates in the Australian Alps in New South Wales and flows through Victoria and South Australia before reaching the Southern Ocean. The river is approximately 2,508 kilometres long and forms the backbone of the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia's largest river system. It supports agriculture, industries, tourism, transportation, and local communities. The Murray River is also environmentally significant, providing habitats for diverse wildlife and maintaining wetlands that are essential for Australia's ecological balance.

The Murray River begins in the Australian Alps near Mount Kosciuszko in New South Wales. It flows westward and southwest through southeastern Australia before emptying into the Southern Ocean near Lake Alexandrina. The river is about 2,508 kilometres long and drains a large part of the Murray–Darling Basin, which covers nearly 40% of Australia's agricultural land. It is Australia's most important river for irrigation and water supply.
