OKAVANGO RIVER

1. Introduction (Okavango River)

The Okavango River is one of the most unique rivers in Southern Africa because it is an endorheic (inland) river that does not flow into a sea or ocean. It originates in the Bié Plateau of Angola, flows through Namibia, and enters Botswana, where it spreads into the famous Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta. The river is approximately 1,600 kilometres (994 miles) long. It supports rich biodiversity, agriculture, fishing, tourism, and local livelihoods. The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Africa's most important wetlands and wildlife habitats.

2. Important Facts

The Okavango River rises in the Bié Plateau of Angola. It flows through Angola, Namibia, and Botswana before ending in the Okavango Delta, where its water evaporates or seeps into the sands of the Kalahari Desert instead of reaching the sea. The river basin covers nearly 414,000 square kilometres, while the river itself is about 1,600 kilometres long. The Okavango River is vital for fishing, tourism, wildlife conservation, irrigation, and local livelihoods. Its seasonal floods create one of the world's richest wetland ecosystems, supporting thousands of plant and animal species.

3. Major Features

The most remarkable feature of the Okavango River is the Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world, covering nearly 15,000 square kilometres during peak floods. Unlike most rivers, the Okavango never reaches the ocean. Instead, it spreads across the Kalahari Desert, forming marshes, lagoons, channels, and islands. The delta is home to elephants, lions, buffaloes, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and hundreds of bird species. The river's annual floodwaters transform the desert into a lush wetland, creating one of Africa's most productive ecosystems and an internationally recognised biodiversity hotspot.
