ORINOCO RIVER

1. Orinoco River – Introduction

The Orinoco River is one of the largest and most important rivers in South America. It originates in the Sierra Parima Highlands of southeastern Venezuela and flows eastward before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean through a vast delta. The river is famous for its extensive drainage basin, rich biodiversity, and economic importance. It supports agriculture, fishing, inland navigation, and hydroelectric power generation. Flowing mainly through Venezuela and partly along the Colombia–Venezuela border, the Orinoco is often regarded as the lifeline of Venezuela. Its fertile floodplains and tropical forests make it one of South America's most valuable natural resources.

2. Geographical Features of the Orinoco River

The Orinoco River rises near the Sierra Parima Mountains in southeastern Venezuela, close to the Brazilian border. It flows mainly through Venezuela before forming a large delta and draining into the Atlantic Ocean. The river is approximately 2,140 kilometres long and has a drainage basin of nearly 1,000,000 square kilometres, making it the second-largest river basin in South America after the Amazon. It generally flows from west to east and is divided into the Upper Orinoco, Middle Orinoco, Lower Orinoco, and Orinoco Delta. The river passes through tropical forests, savannas, and fertile floodplains.

3. Major Tributaries and Important Places of the Orinoco River

The Orinoco River receives water from several important tributaries, including the Caroní River, Apure River, Meta River, Guaviare River, and Caño Cristales. These rivers contribute significantly to its water volume and support agriculture and transportation. Major cities and locations along the river include Ciudad Bolívar, San Fernando de Atabapo, Puerto Ayacucho, Barinas, and the Orinoco Delta. Ciudad Bolívar is an important commercial centre, while the delta is known for its rich wetlands and biodiversity. These places play an essential role in trade, tourism, fishing, and regional economic development.
