SENEGAL RIVER

1. Introduction to the Senegal River

The Senegal River is one of the most important international rivers in West Africa. It originates in the Fouta Djallon Highlands of Guinea and flows through Mali, forms the border between Mauritania and Senegal, and finally empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The river is approximately 1,700 kilometres long and serves as a lifeline for millions of people. It provides water for irrigation, drinking, fishing, transportation, and hydroelectric power generation. The Senegal River Basin is also known for its fertile agricultural land, rich biodiversity, and significant contribution to the economic development of the surrounding countries.

2. Important Facts

The Senegal River rises in the Fouta Djallon Mountains of Guinea and flows westward through Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal before entering the Atlantic Ocean near Saint-Louis. It has a total length of about 1,700 kilometres. The river forms an important natural boundary between Mauritania and Senegal. Several dams, including the Manantali Dam and Diama Dam, regulate its flow, provide hydroelectric power, improve irrigation, and prevent saltwater intrusion. The river basin supports agriculture, fisheries, transportation, and drinking water, making it one of the most valuable water resources in West Africa.
