1. Majuli Island – Largest River Island

Majuli Island, located in the Brahmaputra River in Assam, is the world's largest inhabited river island and one of India's most important cultural and ecological landmarks. Covering around 352 square kilometres, it is renowned for its rich biodiversity, wetlands, and traditional Assamese culture. Majuli is the centre of Neo-Vaishnavism, introduced by the saint Srimanta Sankardeva, and is home to several historic Satras (monasteries). The island supports agriculture, fishing, and handicrafts, providing livelihoods to local communities. However, continuous riverbank erosion and flooding threaten its existence, making conservation and sustainable river management essential for preserving this unique heritage.

2. Godavari River – Longest River of Southern India

The Godavari River, often called the "Dakshin Ganga" (Ganga of the South), is the longest river in southern India, stretching approximately 1,465 kilometres. It originates from Trimbakeshwar near Nashik in Maharashtra and flows through Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. The river basin supports agriculture, drinking water supply, irrigation, hydroelectric projects, and fisheries. Major tributaries include the Pranhita, Indravati, and Sabari rivers. The Godavari also holds immense religious significance, with the Godavari Pushkaram festival attracting millions of devotees every twelve years along its sacred banks.

3. Chilika Lake – Largest Saline Water Lake

Chilika Lake, located on the eastern coast of Odisha, is India's largest brackish (saline) water lagoon. It covers an area that varies seasonally between 900 and 1,165 square kilometres. Connected to the Bay of Bengal, Chilika is internationally recognised as a Ramsar Wetland due to its ecological importance. It provides habitat for migratory birds, Irrawaddy dolphins, fish, and numerous aquatic species. The lake supports thousands of fishermen and promotes eco-tourism. Chilika also plays an important role in flood control and biodiversity conservation. Its rich ecosystem makes it one of India's most valuable coastal wetlands.
