1. Introduction to the Tagus River

The Tagus River is one of the most important rivers in Western Europe and the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula. It originates in the Sierra de Albarracín of eastern Spain and flows westward through Spain and Portugal before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon. With a length of approximately 1,007 kilometres, it is also the longest river in Portugal. The Tagus has played a vital role in the history, economy, and culture of both countries. It supports agriculture, transportation, tourism, and hydroelectric power generation, making it one of Europe's most valuable river systems.

2. Geographical Location

The Tagus River rises in the Sierra de Albarracín Mountains in Spain and flows west across the Iberian Peninsula into Portugal. It finally empties into the Atlantic Ocean through a broad estuary near Lisbon, Portugal's capital city. The river is approximately 1,007 kilometres long and drains a large basin shared by Spain and Portugal. Along its journey, it passes through fertile valleys and supports several reservoirs and irrigation systems. Abrantes is another significant Portuguese town situated on the river, playing an important role in regional trade and transportation. The river finally reaches Lisbon, Portugal's capital and largest city, where it forms a magnificent estuary before entering the Atlantic Ocean. These cities have benefited from the river's water resources, transportation facilities, fertile lands, tourism, and commercial opportunities throughout history.
