1. Trigonometric Ratios – Introduction

The hypotenuse is the longest side and lies opposite the right angle. The opposite side is directly opposite the angle being considered, while the adjacent side is next to that angle. 5. Tangent Function (tan θ)

Tangent is useful for determining heights and distances when direct measurement is difficult. It is widely applied in engineering, construction, astronomy, and navigation. Unlike sine and cosine, tangent values can become very large as angles approach ninety degrees. Tangent is especially helpful in slope calculations because it relates vertical and horizontal measurements. Cotangent, represented as cot θ, is the reciprocal of the tangent function. It is defined as the ratio of the adjacent side to the opposite side of a right triangle.
