TYPES OF PLATE BOUNDARIES
1. Convergent Boundary
A convergent boundary is formed when two tectonic plates move toward each other and collide. In many cases, one plate is forced beneath the other in a process called subduction. This creates deep ocean trenches, volcanic activity, and mountain ranges. The immense pressure generated at convergent boundaries often causes powerful earthquakes. When two continental plates collide, large fold mountains such as the Himalayas are formed. Magma produced by the melting of the subducted plate may rise to the surface and create volcanoes. Convergent boundaries are among the most geologically active regions on Earth and continuously reshape the planet's surface.
2. Divergent Boundary
A divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other. As the plates separate, magma rises from the Earth's mantle to fill the gap and solidifies to form new crust. This process is known as sea-floor spreading. Divergent boundaries are commonly found along mid-ocean ridges, such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. They can also create rift valleys on continents. Earthquakes and volcanic activity are common in these regions, though usually less destructive than at convergent boundaries.
