VAN MAHOTSAV

1. Meaning of Van Mahotsav

Van Mahotsav, meaning "Festival of Forests," is India's annual tree-planting campaign celebrated during the first week of July (1–7 July). The word "Van" means forest, and "Mahotsav" means grand festival. It was started in 1950 by Dr. K. M. Munshi, then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food, to encourage afforestation and environmental conservation. The festival promotes public participation in planting and protecting trees to improve ecological balance. Schools, colleges, government departments, NGOs, and local communities actively participate by planting saplings and spreading awareness about the importance of forests for sustainable development.

2. Objectives of Van Mahotsav

The primary objective of Van Mahotsav is to increase India's forest cover and promote environmental conservation through large-scale tree plantation. It encourages afforestation and reforestation to restore degraded forests and improve biodiversity. The campaign aims to protect wildlife habitats, reduce soil erosion, improve groundwater recharge, and combat climate change. It also seeks to involve citizens, especially students and local communities, in protecting natural resources. By promoting sustainable development and environmental awareness, Van Mahotsav inspires people to plant and care for trees throughout the year. The programme contributes significantly to ecological balance and long-term environmental sustainability.

3. Why is Van Mahotsav Celebrated?

Van Mahotsav is celebrated to highlight the importance of trees in maintaining ecological balance and combating environmental challenges. Tree plantation increases forest cover, absorbs carbon dioxide, releases oxygen, reduces air pollution, and helps control global warming. Trees also prevent soil erosion, reduce flood risks, improve groundwater recharge, and provide habitat for wildlife. The festival encourages people to participate in environmental conservation and develop a sense of responsibility toward nature. Celebrating Van Mahotsav during the monsoon season ensures better survival of newly planted saplings due to adequate rainfall and favourable growing conditions.
