1. Eruption Cloud
An eruption cloud is a large cloud of ash, gases, steam, and rock particles released into the atmosphere during a volcanic eruption. It forms when hot volcanic materials are blasted upward with great force. Eruption clouds can rise many kilometers above the volcano and spread across large regions with the help of wind. These clouds can reduce visibility, affect air travel, and impact human health by causing respiratory problems. Volcanic ash within the cloud may also influence weather and climate. Eruption clouds are important indicators of eruption intensity and are carefully monitored by volcanologists and disaster management agencies.
2. Eruption Column
An eruption column is the vertical column of hot ash, gases, and volcanic debris that rises directly from a volcano during an eruption. It forms due to the tremendous pressure generated by escaping magma and gases. The height of the eruption column depends on the strength of the eruption and can reach several kilometers into the atmosphere. As the column rises, it cools and spreads outward to form an eruption cloud. Eruption columns are useful in assessing the severity of volcanic activity. They can disrupt air traffic, reduce air quality, and spread ash over large distances from the volcano.
