WHY ARE THERE PROTESTS IN POK

1. What Triggered the Protests?

The protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) were triggered by growing economic hardship and dissatisfaction with political representation. Rising electricity tariffs, inflation, and the increasing cost of essential commodities placed a heavy financial burden on the local population. Many residents argued that although the region generates hydropower, they still pay high electricity prices. Public anger also intensified over the political system, particularly the reservation of seats for refugees, which some believe reduces fair representation of local people. These economic and political grievances led to widespread demonstrations demanding affordable living conditions, transparent governance, and greater participation in decision-making.

2. Who Is Leading the Movement?

The protests are primarily led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a coalition formed in 2023. It serves as an umbrella organization representing civil society groups, traders, students, lawyers, and socio-religious organizations. JAAC emerged to unite various groups protesting against inflation, rising electricity tariffs, and political issues affecting the people of PoK. Through peaceful demonstrations, public meetings, and awareness campaigns, the organization seeks reforms that improve governance and protect citizens' rights. JAAC has become a significant voice for local concerns, demanding economic relief, political accountability, and fair representation while encouraging public participation in democratic processes.

3. Main Demands of JAAC

The Joint Awami Action Committee has presented several demands to address the concerns of the people. These include subsidized wheat flour to reduce food costs, fair electricity pricing based on local hydropower generation, abolition of the twelve refugee-reserved seats in the PoK Assembly, compensation for families affected by violence, and the release of detained activists. JAAC also seeks the implementation of a health card scheme and a financial grant to improve the region's electricity infrastructure. Overall, these demands aim to reduce economic hardship, strengthen public welfare, improve governance, and ensure that local residents receive fair treatment and equal opportunities.
