Human and Digital Consciousness: AI, Indian Society and the Philosophical Future

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies of the twenty-first century. It is not merely a new digital tool but a civilisational shift that is changing the way societies learn, work, govern, and interact. AI is influencing knowledge, employment, education, healthcare, governance, and even philosophical ideas about consciousness and human identity. As machines increasingly imitate human intelligence, important questions arise regarding the nature of consciousness, moral responsibility, creativity, and the future relationship between humans and intelligent machines.

Artificial Intelligence and Human Consciousness

The rapid advancement of AI has blurred the distinction between intelligence and consciousness. Modern AI systems can generate language, analyse data, solve problems, and even produce creative content. However, such capabilities should not be confused with consciousness. Intelligence refers to the ability to perform tasks efficiently, whereas consciousness involves subjective experience, self-awareness, emotions, and the ability to experience the world from a personal perspective. A machine may imitate intelligent behaviour without possessing genuine awareness or feelings.
