1. Election Commission’s Special Drive for Voters Left Out During SIR
The Election Commission directed 20 States and Union Territories where Special Intensive Revision (SIR) had been completed to conduct a special enrolment drive for eligible citizens left out of electoral rolls. The move followed scrutiny over large-scale deletions: the newspaper reports that about 13 crore names had been removed from draft rolls across 30 States and UTs. The corrective exercise will use the statutory Form 6 without the additional SIR-related question that had earlier attracted objections within the Commission. Officials were also asked to compare pre- and post-SIR rolls and identify eligible people who may have been wrongly excluded. ie-delhi-02-10-2026 Logic: electoral-roll purification and universal adult franchise must operate together; removal of duplicates or ineligible entries cannot justify exclusion of genuine electors. Gist: accurate electoral rolls require procedural safeguards, decentralised statutory authority, transparent technology and accessible mechanisms for restoration of eligible voters. This connects directly with Article 326, electoral administration and democratic legitimacy.
2. One Nation, One Election Panel and the Separation of Powers
The Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the proposed simultaneous-election Bills cancelled a scheduled visit to the Supreme Court after its circulated agenda referred to an “informal discussion” with the Chief Justice of India and other judges. The committee chair later said the visit was intended for familiarisation rather than discussion of the legislation. Opposition members argued that consultation on a Bill that could subsequently face judicial review might raise separation-of-powers concerns. The committee is examining the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, which proposes, among other changes, a new Article 82A for synchronising Lok Sabha and Assembly terms. ie-delhi-02-10-2026 Former Chief Justices appearing as experts have expressed differing views on particular provisions and constitutional implications. ie-delhi-02-10-2026 Logic: Parliament legislates while courts review constitutionality. Gist: institutional dialogue is valuable, but constitutional processes must preserve both legislative autonomy and the judiciary’s independent adjudicatory role.
