1. Election Commission and SIR — Institutional Credibility Under Scrutiny
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has developed into a major institutional and political controversy. Opposition MPs protested against the Election Commission and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while the ECI defended its procedures and meeting protocols. The lead editorial, “Can Election Commission untie knots of its own making?”, focuses on a deeper question: whether the Commission’s handling of SIR, including disputes over modifications to Form 6 and reported disagreements within the Commission, has weakened public confidence. Logic: Article 324 gives the ECI substantial autonomy precisely because elections require an impartial referee. Autonomy, however, must be accompanied by transparency, collective institutional decision-making and legal consistency. Stand: the editorial is critical of the Commission’s handling of the controversy and stresses restoration of credibility. Gist: electoral integrity depends not only on technically correct rolls but also on public trust, procedural fairness and visibly independent institutions.
