1. Xi Jinping’s India Visit: Border Talks and Strategic Economic Dialogue
Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit India for the BRICS Summit on September 12–13 and hold a structured bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his first visit to India in seven years. The talks are expected to review recent Special Representatives-level boundary discussions and explore launching a Strategic Economic Dialogue. Recent confidence-building steps include proposed new military hotlines and commander-level meeting points, resumption of direct flights, easing of visa restrictions, revival of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage and relaxation of some curbs on Chinese investment. However, unresolved issues remain, including market access, transboundary-river data, visa restrictions, Chinese business activity in India and continuing troop deployment along the LAC. The logic is gradual stabilisation without ignoring security concerns.
