1. Modi–Xi Talks: ‘Partners, Not Rivals’ and the Boundary Question
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first bilateral meeting in India in seven years on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit and agreed that differences should not become disputes. They committed themselves to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question, while Modi reiterated the three principles of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest. India stressed that peace and tranquillity along the border remain essential for further development of bilateral relations. Both leaders also discussed the structural trade imbalance, supply-chain concerns, predictable market access and restoration of cultural, business and people-to-people exchanges. Xi characterised India and China as “partners rather than rivals” and development opportunities rather than threats. The logic is cautious normalisation following the 2020 LAC confrontation and subsequent disengagement. The gist is that economic and diplomatic recovery can proceed, but lasting India-China normalisation remains conditional on stable border management, mutual strategic sensitivity and reduction of economic asymmetries.
