1. Jharkhand JPSC Cancellation: Punishing the Guilty Without Punishing Honest Candidates
Jharkhand’s cancellation of the 14th JPSC Combined Civil Services examination after allegations of irregularities has created a second crisis for over 2,200 candidates who had already cleared the preliminary examination. Aspirants interviewed by The Indian Express included candidates who quit jobs, relied on public libraries, overcame disability and spent years preparing. They support stringent action against paper leaks but question why the entire examination should be cancelled without first establishing the scale of malpractice. Nearly 1,800 successful candidates reportedly submitted carbon copies of their OMR sheets to the CID. The underlying policy dilemma is between protecting examination integrity and respecting natural justice for candidates unconnected with wrongdoing. Blanket cancellation is administratively simple but imposes heavy psychological, financial and opportunity costs on innocent aspirants.
