1. BRICS Summit: Modi Warns against ‘Weaponisation’ of Technology and Critical Minerals
At the concluding session of the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned that weaponisation of technology and critical minerals could obstruct shared development, calling for inclusivity in access to emerging technologies. His remarks assume importance amid China’s strong position in critical-mineral supply chains and intensifying US-China competition over advanced technology. Modi also announced initiatives such as a BRICS Integrated Early Warning System for infectious diseases, a Logistics Supply Chain Cooperation Framework, an Incubator Network, Startup Innovation Fund, MSME portal, Smart Grids and Energy Storage Centre, Urban Mobility Hub and agro-ecology centres. The underlying logic is that pandemics, climate disasters and supply-chain disruptions cannot remain confined within national borders, requiring collective resilience. India’s stand is therefore against concentrated technological control and in favour of wider Global South participation. The gist is that strategic autonomy today depends not merely on military capability but on diversified access to technology, minerals, health systems, digital infrastructure and resilient supply chains.
