1. Inflation Rises: Food Prices Put RBI’s October Policy Meeting in Focus
India’s retail inflation rose to 4.82% in August from 4.45% in July, its highest level in at least eight months, while food inflation increased from 5.52% to 5.95%. Sugar prices were particularly under pressure because of lower-than-expected production and depleted inventories, prompting the government to permit duty-free raw-sugar imports; onion prices also rose as late rains disrupted planting. Inflationary pressure appears broader, with 314 of the 358 CPI items recording month-on-month price increases. Wholesale inflation also climbed to 9.92%, while wholesale food inflation reached 7.05%. The RBI is mandated to maintain CPI inflation at 4%, within the 2–6% tolerance band, and the October 5–7 MPC meeting will therefore be closely watched for a possible rate increase. The central policy dilemma is clear: with GDP growth robust at 7.8%, monetary policy has space to contain inflation, but excessive tightening could affect investment and demand. The gist is that persistent food shocks risk becoming generalised inflation, requiring coordination between monetary, agricultural, trade and supply-side policies.
2. El Niño, Erratic Monsoon and the Return of Food-Inflation Risks
The southwest monsoon of 2026 has been unusually erratic, with cumulative all-India rainfall 14.7% below the long-period average by September 14 and 24 of 36 meteorological subdivisions recording deficits exceeding 10%. Although kharif acreage is only about 1.4% below last year, falling fertiliser sales and rising market prices of maize, arhar and soybean suggest that acreage figures may conceal lower yields. El Niño weakened moisture-bearing easterly winds, producing an uneven pattern of prolonged dry spells and intense rainfall. The situation could worsen because El Niño is already “strong”, and the report cites forecasts of a possible “very strong” phase. This could mean a warmer, shorter winter and affect rabi crops such as wheat, mustard, pulses, potato and onion. Simultaneously, the FAO food-price index reached its highest level since November 2022. The gist is that India faces a combined climate-food-security challenge: production depends not merely on total rainfall but on its spatial and temporal distribution, while geopolitical disruptions and rising global prices can amplify domestic inflation.
