1. India’s GDP Grows 7.8% in Q1 Despite West Asia Shock
India’s real GDP grew 7.8% year-on-year in April-June 2026-27, exceeding the RBI’s 7% projection and the previous year’s 6.9% growth for the same quarter. Manufacturing expanded by 9.2%, while services grew by 10%, with financial, real-estate and professional services contributing strongly. Private consumption rose 7.1%, investment remained healthy, capital-goods production increased and government capex provided additional momentum. The government called the performance evidence of economic resilience and reform, while the Opposition cautioned against reading headline GDP as a complete picture of employment and household welfare. The main risks are persistent West Asia tensions, elevated crude-oil prices, rising food inflation and a strengthening El Niño. Analysts also see a stronger possibility of an RBI rate hike if inflation continues rising. The gist is that India’s growth momentum is robust, but sustaining it requires controlling inflation, preserving investment and protecting consumption from external energy and climate shocks.
