1. Nepal Flood Toll Nears 600; India Expands Rescue and Relief Effort

Two days after catastrophic flash floods struck Nepal, the death toll rose to 579, while at least 320 Indians and more than 100 people of Indian origin remained missing. Around 400 Indians stranded on the Chinese side of the Nepal-Tibet border were reported safe, and 149 had crossed back into Nepal. India dispatched a third tranche of humanitarian assistance, including 10 tonnes of relief supplies, an 11-member medical team and a reconnaissance crew to assess tunnel-rescue requirements; Bailey bridges and NDRF assistance were also offered. The disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse that sent rock, ice and debris through the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli system, while a newly formed barrier lake created fears of secondary flooding. The logic is that Himalayan disasters quickly become transboundary humanitarian crises. The gist is that India’s response must combine immediate HADR with long-term cooperation on glacial monitoring, evacuation protocols, resilient infrastructure and real-time upstream data-sharing with Nepal and China.
