1. Nationwide Protests Seeking CEC’s Exit — Electoral Trust and Institutional Accountability
Opposition parties, civil-society organisations, activists and student groups held protests across several States demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Hundreds were detained in Delhi after protesters attempted to reach Jantar Mantar. Opposition leaders allege that SIR has resulted in wrongful voter exclusions and have questioned the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls; the ECI has rejected allegations of wrongdoing. The controversy should therefore be understood as a dispute involving competing political and institutional claims rather than proof of electoral manipulation. Constitutionally, Article 324 entrusts election administration to the ECI, while universal adult suffrage is embodied in Article 326. Gist: electoral credibility requires both institutional independence and procedural accountability. Transparent roll changes, individual notice, accessible appeals, auditable decisions and public explanation are essential for maintaining confidence in election administration.
2. India–U.S. Trade Agreement ‘Not Imminent’ — Negotiations Enter Difficult Final Phase
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said an India–U.S. trade agreement was “not imminent,” although negotiations were in their final stages and the remaining sticking points had largely been identified. His comments followed talks with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal during the G20 Trade Ministers’ meeting in Milwaukee. The negotiations illustrate why the final stage of a trade agreement is often the hardest: remaining disputes generally involve politically sensitive sectors and regulatory questions rather than easy tariff concessions. Both governments have publicly favoured deeper economic engagement, but their interests do not automatically coincide. India seeks greater market access while protecting sensitive domestic sectors; Washington has its own concerns about trade practices and market access. Gist: India should judge a trade agreement by the quality and reciprocity of market access, investment and regulatory outcomes rather than speed alone. Strategic partnership can facilitate negotiations, but it cannot eliminate legitimate economic differences.
