1. India-Pakistan Naval Incident: Corvette Collides with Indian Warship
An Indian naval warship and Pakistan Navy corvette PNS Hunain collided in the North Arabian Sea after what India described as an “unsafe and unprofessional” high-speed approach by the Pakistani vessel. The Indian ship was undertaking a routine surveillance mission when PNS Hunain reportedly approached from astern, attempted to intercept it and subsequently collided before returning to harbour. No casualties were reported, and the Indian vessel sustained limited damage while continuing its mission. India summoned Pakistan’s envoy and lodged a diplomatic protest, arguing that the manoeuvre violated accepted standards of maritime conduct and risked escalation. Pakistan disputed India’s account and blamed the Indian ship for the incident. The episode highlights the importance of professional naval behaviour, communication and confidence-building mechanisms between nuclear-armed neighbours. At sea, miscalculation can rapidly acquire strategic consequences. Existing bilateral arrangements aimed at preventing incidents therefore need strict observance, particularly amid simultaneous deployments and persistent India-Pakistan tensions.
