1. Indian Oil Imports Fall After U.S. Curbs — Energy Security vs. External Pressure
India has sharply altered its crude-oil sourcing following intensified U.S. pressure on countries purchasing energy from Russia, Iran and Venezuela. The Hindu’s data analysis reports that Russia’s share in India’s oil imports, which had remained around 30–40%, fell to 19.3% in 2026, while the United States’ share increased to about 51%. The change illustrates India’s difficult balance between energy security, affordable crude and strategic autonomy on one side and exposure to American tariffs and sanctions on the other. India had earlier benefited from discounted Russian crude after the Ukraine war, but tighter U.S. measures have changed the commercial risk calculation for refiners. Washington argues that restrictions reduce revenues available to sanctioned states; India maintains that its energy purchases are determined by national interest and market requirements. The larger issue is diversification: excessive dependence on any one supplier increases vulnerability. Gist: energy security increasingly requires India to combine price competitiveness with diversified sourcing and geopolitical risk management. (Moneycontrol)
