1. Opposition Allegations Against Election Commission — Institutional Credibility in Focus
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged that recent elections were “rigged” and demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, following reports of disagreements within the Election Commission over electoral-roll decisions. These are political allegations and have not, by themselves, established that election results were manipulated. Reports indicate that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on several occasions regarding voter registration, deletion, restoration and database-related decisions. NDTV The Election Commission has maintained that internal differences are part of institutional deliberation and that final decisions were taken collectively. The constitutional issue extends beyond partisan claims: under Article 324, the ECI must administer elections independently and command public confidence. Electoral-roll revision must simultaneously remove invalid entries and protect eligible voters against wrongful exclusion. Gist: democratic credibility depends on transparent electoral procedures, auditable decisions, effective appeals and institutional independence rather than political assertions alone.
2. Cauvery Dispute — Supreme Court Seeks Karnataka’s Response to Tamil Nadu
The Supreme Court asked Karnataka to respond within a week to Tamil Nadu’s plea alleging a substantial shortfall in its share of Cauvery water, with the matter scheduled for further hearing in October. Tamil Nadu argued that inadequate releases had affected its Kharif cultivation and asked that the accumulated deficit be addressed. Karnataka countered that it was facing severe drought, declining reservoir inflows and competing drinking-water and agricultural requirements. The Economic Times The dispute illustrates the structural difficulty of inter-State river sharing during rainfall-deficit years: a fixed allocation framework must operate under variable hydrological conditions and competing livelihood needs. Institutions such as the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee are therefore critical for data-based implementation and monitoring. Gist: durable river governance requires transparent hydrological data, institutional compliance, basin-level planning and cooperative federalism rather than treating water allocation solely as a zero-sum dispute between States.
