1. China’s Yarlung Zangbo mega-dam and India’s downstream concerns
China plans a massive hydropower project on the Yarlung Zangbo, which becomes the Brahmaputra after entering India, despite concerns following a major glacial collapse near the Nepal-China border. The project envisages five power stations with an estimated capacity of 60 GW, with a reservoir and roughly 40-km tunnel around the Great Bend diverting water towards powerhouses. China argues that the project has undergone scientific assessment and incorporates geological and environmental safeguards. India’s concern, however, centres on downstream water flows, storage, ecological impacts and the consequences of any sudden release or infrastructure failure. The logic of Indian apprehension arises from its position as a lower-riparian country dependent on timely hydrological information. The larger issue is therefore not merely dam construction but transboundary river governance. China maintains that downstream interests will not be adversely affected. Nevertheless, sustained data-sharing, disaster-warning mechanisms, transparency and institutional cooperation are essential for managing a river system shared by China, India and Bangladesh.
2. Millennials increasingly investing in cryptocurrencies through SIPs
A significant investment trend is emerging as millennial investors increasingly enter cryptocurrencies through systematic investment plans (SIPs) rather than relying exclusively on speculative one-time purchases. The shift reflects the evolution of cryptocurrency participation from the excitement surrounding rapid overnight gains in 2021 towards a more structured approach involving regular, smaller investments. SIP-style investing can reduce the temptation to time highly volatile crypto markets and spreads purchases over different price levels. However, the underlying asset remains fundamentally different from conventional mutual-fund SIPs: cryptocurrencies can experience extreme volatility, regulatory uncertainty, technological risks and abrupt changes in investor sentiment. The logic behind the trend is therefore behavioural as much as financial—young investors familiar with digital platforms seek exposure to emerging asset classes while adopting disciplined investment practices. The development also raises questions for regulators concerning investor protection, taxation, exchange governance and financial literacy. Regular investing does not eliminate crypto risk; consequently, investors need to distinguish between disciplined investment methodology and the inherent riskiness of the underlying asset.
