ELEPHANTA ISLAND — NEW RESEARCH ON INDIA’S ANCIENT MARITIME HISTORY
Context
In September 2026, IIT Kharagpur, Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) launched a joint interdisciplinary project to study the maritime history, past sea levels and climate changes around Elephanta Island near Mumbai. MbPA has pledged ₹1 crore for the research.
