1. Can Dedicated Freight Corridors transform India's manufacturing competitiveness, or are they merely large infrastructure projects?
Answer: Dedicated Freight Corridors can significantly improve India's competitiveness, but infrastructure alone cannot guarantee results. The completed Western and Eastern corridors together provide about 2,843 km of dedicated freight lines, separating freight from passenger traffic and increasing average freight speeds. Faster and more reliable logistics can reduce inventory and transport costs and improve exports. However, the real benefit depends on last-mile connectivity with ports, industrial clusters and logistics hubs, reasonable freight tariffs and high utilisation. Therefore, I would judge DFCs not by kilometres constructed, but by whether they reduce logistics costs and shift freight towards efficient rail transport.
