WHY DOES THE COROMANDEL COAST RECEIVE RAINFALL TWICE A YEAR ?
1. South-West Monsoon and the First Rainfall
The South-West Monsoon is the first source of rainfall for the Coromandel Coast and occurs between June and September. These moisture-laden winds originate from the Arabian Sea and strike the Western Ghats along India's western coast. The mountains force the winds to rise, causing heavy rainfall on the western side. After crossing the Western Ghats, the winds lose much of their moisture and enter the Deccan Plateau and Coromandel Coast as relatively dry winds. As a result, the Coromandel Coast receives only limited rainfall during this season. Therefore, the South-West Monsoon contributes comparatively less to the region’s annual precipitation.
2. North-East Monsoon and the Main Rainfall
The North-East Monsoon is the primary source of rainfall for the Coromandel Coast and occurs from October to December. During winter, high-pressure conditions develop over northern India, causing winds to blow from land towards the sea. As these winds move across the Bay of Bengal, they absorb large amounts of moisture.
