1. Kathak

Kathak is one of the eight classical dance forms of India and originated in Uttar Pradesh. The word Kathak comes from Katha, meaning "story." It was developed by Kathakars, who narrated stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana through dance, music, and expressions. During the Mughal period, Kathak incorporated Persian influences, making it more graceful and refined. The dance is famous for fast footwork (Tatkar), spins (Chakkars), expressive gestures (Abhinaya), and rhythmic compositions. The three major gharanas are Lucknow, Jaipur, and Banaras. Kathak is performed with tabla, sarangi, harmonium, and vocal music.

2. Birju Maharaj

Pandit Birju Maharaj (1938–2022) was India's greatest Kathak exponent and belonged to the Lucknow Gharana. Born into the famous Kalka-Bindadin family, he began learning Kathak at a very young age. He was known for his graceful movements, expressive storytelling, rhythmic mastery, and innovative choreography. Besides being a dancer, he was also an accomplished singer, tabla player, and composer. Birju Maharaj trained thousands of students and popularized Kathak worldwide through stage performances and films. He received India's highest honours, including the Padma Vibhushan, and remains one of the most respected legends of Indian classical dance.

3. Sitara Devi

Sitara Devi was one of the most celebrated Kathak dancers of India and is popularly known as the "Queen of Kathak." She belonged to the Banaras Gharana and began performing from an early age. Her energetic footwork, expressive facial movements, and powerful stage presence made her internationally famous. She performed before audiences across Europe, America, and Asia, promoting Indian dance globally. Sitara Devi also acted in films during her early career. She received numerous national honours for her contributions to Indian culture. Her performances combined technical brilliance with emotional storytelling, inspiring generations of Kathak dancers.
