1. Shadow Puppets

Shadow puppetry is an ancient art form in which flat leather puppets are held behind a white screen illuminated by a lamp or light source. The audience sees only the moving shadows, creating dramatic visual effects. Different states have distinct traditions, such as Tholu Bommalata (Andhra Pradesh), Togalu Gombeyaata (Karnataka), Ravana Chhaya (Odisha), and Tolpavakoothu (Kerala). These performances usually narrate stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and regional legends. Shadow puppetry combines skilled craftsmanship, music, narration, and visual storytelling, making it an important component of India's rich folk theatre tradition.

2. Rod Puppets

Rod puppets are a traditional form of Indian puppetry controlled with rods attached to the puppet's body and limbs. They are larger than string puppets and allow performers to create realistic movements. This style is especially popular in West Bengal (Putul Nach), Odisha (Kathi Kundhei), and parts of Bihar. Stories are usually based on the Ramayana, Mahabharata, local legends, and historical events. Performances include music, narration, and dramatic dialogues. Rod puppetry requires excellent coordination and craftsmanship, making it an important folk theatre tradition that preserves India's cultural heritage through entertaining and educational performances.

3. Glove Puppets

Glove puppets are small puppets worn directly on the performer's hand. The puppeteer's fingers control the puppet's head and arms, allowing lively expressions and quick movements. This style is mainly found in Kerala (Pavakoothu), Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh. Glove puppet shows generally present mythological stories, folk tales, moral lessons, and humorous performances. They are simple to operate yet highly expressive, making them popular among children and village audiences. The colourful costumes, storytelling, music, and audience interaction make glove puppetry an important part of India's traditional performing arts and folk entertainment.
