1. BRICS Summit: West Asia War Tests India’s Consensus-Building Diplomacy

Ahead of the New Delhi BRICS Summit on September 12–13, negotiators from the grouping’s 11 members are trying to bridge sharp differences over the escalating West Asia conflict. The challenge is particularly difficult because Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia are all members, while Iran and the UAE have been on opposing sides of recent regional tensions. India, assisted by Russia, Brazil and Egypt, is attempting to secure a consensus Delhi Declaration rather than settle for a chair’s statement, as happened at the May foreign ministers’ meeting. India’s BRICS chairship is organised around four pillars—Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability—covering energy and food security, supply chains, AI, digital public infrastructure, climate action and reform of global governance institutions. The gist is that India’s success as BRICS chair will depend not merely on hosting leaders but on demonstrating that an expanded, politically diverse Global South platform can still produce common positions despite geopolitical conflict.
