1. Iran-U.S. conflict escalates and threatens the Strait of Hormuz
Tensions between Iran and the United States intensified sharply, with the U.S. attacking Iranian oil tankers and Iran responding by targeting ships attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz. Iran claimed effective control over the strategic waterway and warned vessels against passage without permission, while U.S. naval forces reported attacks on Iranian tankers and military targets. The confrontation has immediate global economic consequences because the Strait is a critical route for petroleum exports from the Persian Gulf. Brent crude crossed $100 a barrel, demonstrating how geopolitical risk quickly translates into energy-price shocks. The strategic logic is dangerous: military pressure intended to weaken an adversary can trigger retaliation against shipping and energy infrastructure, thereby internationalising the costs of a bilateral conflict. The broader lesson is that uninterrupted freedom of navigation is a global public good. De-escalation, diplomatic channels and protection of commercial shipping are essential to prevent energy insecurity, inflation and wider regional conflict.
2. India-Sri Lanka defence cooperation: three MoUs signed
India and Sri Lanka signed three defence-sector Memoranda of Understanding, signalling deeper bilateral security cooperation. Defence ties between the two neighbours carry significance because of Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean and India’s interest in maintaining a stable maritime neighbourhood. Cooperation can encompass training, capacity-building, maritime-domain awareness, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, while also strengthening coordination against trafficking, piracy and other transnational threats. For Sri Lanka, engagement with India provides access to defence expertise and institutional support; for India, it advances the Neighbourhood First and SAGAR-oriented maritime approach. Yet defence cooperation must remain sensitive to Sri Lankan sovereignty and domestic political concerns, particularly given historical complexities in bilateral relations. The strategic logic should therefore emphasise partnership rather than dominance. Transparent, mutually beneficial cooperation can help ensure that the Indian Ocean remains stable and secure. The agreements also illustrate how India increasingly combines economic, developmental and security engagement to build durable relationships with its immediate maritime neighbours.
