Even as the Joint Parliamentary Committee examines the constitutional Bills for simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, the NDA is reportedly exploring whether elections in the 22 states and Union Territories it governs could be synchronised with the 2029 Lok Sabha election, instead of waiting until 2034. This could require some state Assemblies to be dissolved before completion of their normal terms, although the parliamentary committee chairman stressed that such decisions ultimately rest with individual Chief Ministers and constitutional processes. The argument for simultaneous elections rests on reducing repeated election expenditure, Model Code disruptions and administrative diversion. The counter-argument concerns federalism, fixed legislative mandates and the possibility that national issues could overwhelm state-level political concerns. Any early dissolution would therefore require political consent and constitutional legitimacy, not merely party coordination. The gist is that One Nation, One Election is not simply an electoral-management reform; it potentially restructures the rhythm of Indian federal democracy and must balance efficiency with representative mandates and state autonomy.
