1. India–China Boundary Talks and Xi Jinping’s Likely BRICS Visit
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Special Representatives on the boundary question, met in Beijing and discussed ways to make progress on boundary delimitation while sustaining transboundary cooperation. The talks assume added significance because Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit New Delhi for the BRICS summit on September 12–13, his first India visit since 2019. Relations had deteriorated sharply after the eastern Ladakh military standoff beginning in 2020, although disengagement was completed in late 2024. More than 50,000 troops reportedly remain deployed on either side, showing that de-escalation is incomplete. Meanwhile, direct flights, visas, Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage and some commercial restrictions have been gradually normalised. India’s stand remains that peace and tranquillity along the border are prerequisites for normal bilateral ties. The gist is that engagement is necessary, but political and economic normalisation must proceed alongside credible border stabilisation and military de-escalation.
