1. Nepal Flash Flood: Death Toll Rises, Hundreds Missing, India Steps Up Rescue
The Nepal flash-flood disaster worsened as the official death toll rose to 392, while hundreds remained missing, including about 290 Indian nationals. Around 200 Indians were also stranded on the Chinese side of the Nepal-Tibet border. India coordinated with Nepal and China, sent 47.5 tonnes of humanitarian relief in two military transport aircraft and considered supplying Bailey bridges after several bridges were swept away. A new concern emerged when Chinese authorities warned of a barrier lake containing about two million cubic metres of water, with further inflows expected, creating the risk of another breach. The crisis illustrates the vulnerability of Himalayan transport corridors, pilgrim routes and hydropower infrastructure to sudden cryospheric events. The logic of disaster diplomacy is clear: transboundary hazards require coordination across borders rather than isolated national responses. The gist is that India’s Himalayan disaster policy must combine real-time monitoring, evacuation protocols, resilient infrastructure and permanent cooperation with Nepal and China on upstream hazards.
