1. Nepal flash floods: death toll rises to 389
Nepal’s devastating flash floods have killed at least 389 people, with around 910 still missing and rescue operations continuing on a massive scale. The disaster struck the Rasuwagadhi region after the Bhotekoshi River overflowed following a blockage and sudden release of water upstream near the Tibet border. More than 800 people have been rescued, while bridges, roads, settlements and communication links have suffered extensive damage. Authorities are investigating whether glacial lakes in the Himalayan region contributed to the sudden flood, though the precise cause remains uncertain. Nepal’s Foreign Minister described the event as unprecedented in recent memory. The disaster demonstrates the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to compound hazards involving glaciers, landslides, river blockages and extreme rainfall. Its logic points towards strengthening glacial-lake monitoring, satellite surveillance, early-warning systems, resilient infrastructure and transboundary hydrological cooperation with China. Reconstruction must also account for changing climate risks rather than merely rebuilding damaged infrastructure according to past assumptions.
