1. Nepal Flash Floods: 275 Indians Missing as India Expands Specialised Rescue Assistance

The Nepal disaster remained the most serious regional humanitarian story, with the death toll rising to 675 and nearly 2,400 people still reported missing. The MEA said 275 Indian nationals and 128 people of Indian origin remained unaccounted for, while 108 Indians had been rescued. India stepped up assistance by sending a tunnel-rescue contingent, forensic experts for DNA identification, relief supplies and equipment for modular and Bailey bridges. Around 68.5 tonnes of relief material had already been airlifted. Indian technical teams also surveyed damaged hydropower tunnels, where many workers were feared trapped. The disaster illustrates how a glacier-related rock-and-ice avalanche can trigger cascading hazards—flash floods, debris flows, infrastructure collapse and cross-border movement of bodies through the Gandak system. The gist is that Himalayan disaster management must move beyond relief towards transboundary early-warning systems, resilient hydropower planning, forensic preparedness, satellite monitoring and permanent India-Nepal disaster-response coordination.
