1. Nepal disaster: rescue operations on a war footing
Nepal intensified rescue operations after the death toll from devastating floods rose to 675, with authorities reporting nearly 2,500 people missing. Around 900 people associated with hydropower projects in Chitwan were rescued, including workers who had remained trapped for two days. Nepal’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said thousands had been rescued overall, while foreign nationals were among those affected. India dispatched five tunnel experts to assist operations, particularly in hydropower tunnels, reflecting the importance of specialised international disaster assistance. Nepal also sought international help for search-and-rescue operations, equipment and specialised personnel. The catastrophe demonstrates the vulnerability of Himalayan settlements and infrastructure to extreme hydrological events. The underlying policy lesson is that disaster management must shift from reactive relief towards risk-sensitive infrastructure, river-basin monitoring, early-warning systems, resilient hydropower design and coordinated evacuation planning. Climate-sensitive mountain regions require stronger regional cooperation because disasters can simultaneously affect infrastructure, tourism, livelihoods and citizens of several countries.
